چکیده

Disk shadowing is a technique for maintaining a set of two or more identical disk images on separate disk devices. Its primary purpose is to enhance reliability and availability of secondary storage by providing multiple paths to redundant data. However, shadowing can also boost UO performance. In this paper, we contend that intelligent device scheduling of shadowed disks increases the I/O rate, by allowing parallel reads and by substantially reducing the average seek time for random reads. In particular, we develop an analytic model which shows that the seek time for a random read in a shadow set is a monotonic decreasing function of the number of disks in the set.

Black-Hole X-Ray Transients: The Effect of Irradiation on Time-Dependent Accretion Disk Structure

Some effects of irradiation on time-dependent accretion-disk models for black hole X-ray novae are presented. Two types of irradiation are considered: direct irradiation from the inner hot disk and indirect irradiation as might be reflected by a corona or chromosphere above the disk. The shadowing effect of the time-dependent evolution of the disk height and consequent blocking of the outer dis...

Disk Temperature Variations and Effects on the Snow Line in the Presence of Small Protoplanets

We revisit the computation of a “snow line” in a passive protoplanetary disk during the stage of planetesimal formation. We examine how shadowing and illumination in the vicinity of a planet affects where in the disk ice can form, making use of our method for calculating radiative transfer on disk perturbations with some improvements on the model. We adopt a model for the unperturbed disk struc...

All-AdjacencyMatrices and Their Application to Disk Shadowing

Wepresent the combinatorial design for a kind ofmatrices called all-adjacency matrices. Such a matrix is constructed from a given set of elements; each element of the matrix is adjacent, within some column, to every other element of the set. We present the algorithm for constructing an all-adjacency matrix. These matrices have an important application—to the laying out of logical disks in a sha...
